Hospitals - God's heaven or Satan's hell?!!

Feels great to be a doctor once you are committed to the cause. Feels even greater when you are able to save a life. Feels like God when you are able to do it again and again....
But a sight I witnessed today made feel more like Satan than anything else.
I've worked in this charity hospital for quite sometime now and its heartwarming to see the services being offered here despite the lack of funds. I do understand that in a developing nation like ours with most people still struggling for a livelihood, its very difficult to deliver all the fancy services of a corporate hospital to the cobbler munusamy or the mason ramasamy. But still..
The laboratory here has well trained experienced staff and automated instruments that give accurate results within minutes. There are a few steps though, which require human evaluation. one of them is what we call a peripheral smear..a drop of the patient's blood is dragged across a slide using another slide to make a thin smear and after drying and staining it, the doctor or the technician will be able to tell what's wrong with the cells found in the blood.
Though its a tedious task, its one of the mainstay of any laboratory's work. And the first and foremost requirement here is a nice clean glass slide.that is all. Is that too difficult a task??
What's being done in my hospital is normal except that the slides are REUSED. yup, you read it right. REUSED. And how?? The old slides are washed off the blood and stain using detergent ( which of course, our ayyammas do it sooo sincerely that as a proof of their hardwork, there's always some detergent sticking onto the slide forming visible white patches ) and dried in the sunlight and used the next day. Most of the slides retain the bluish purple tint of the stain and if they aren't properly washed, the results of the following day's patient are going to be affected...
No one seems to understand the importance of making a proper smear or the seriousness of the situation. The technicians had brought this to the notice of the authorities but no new slides were provided. They cost about Rs.50 for a box of 100 slides. Probably cutting down this cost would bring a lot of profit to the management but it would also bring back the patients with undue anxiety who would have got erroneous results.
I've decided to buy these slides for the lab for the benefit for the patients. Maybe as long as I'm posted here.But after that???
